During operation, copper loss in the windings and core loss in the magnetic circuit produce heat. If this heat is not removed effectively, insulation aging accelerates and transformer capacity may be limited.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A radiator increases the heat exchange area between transformer oil and ambient air. It helps keep the oil and winding temperature within the intended operating range.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Natural Oil and Air Circulation<\/h4>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a common ONAN cooling arrangement, hot oil rises from the transformer tank into the radiator panels. As the oil transfers heat through the radiator wall, it becomes cooler and denser, then flows back toward the lower part of the tank.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, air moves naturally around the radiator surface. This natural convection process works without pumps or fans, making it reliable and relatively simple to maintain.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Radiator Structure<\/h4>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transformer radiators are usually made from pressed steel panels welded into channels. They connect to the tank through headers, valves, flanges, or pipe fittings. The number of panels and their size are selected according to the heat dissipation requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For larger transformers, fans may be added to force air across the radiator surface. This OFAF or ONAF-style assistance increases cooling capacity when load demand is high.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important Performance Factors<\/h4>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Radiator performance depends on panel area, oil flow path, weld quality, coating condition, installation spacing, and ambient conditions. Dirt, blocked airflow, corrosion, or closed valves can reduce cooling efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Adequate surface area for the transformer loss level<\/li><li>Smooth oil flow between tank and radiator<\/li><li>Reliable welds and leak-tested construction<\/li><li>Correct coating for outdoor corrosion resistance<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maintenance Considerations<\/h4>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Operators should inspect radiators for oil leakage, rust, physical damage, blocked airflow, and abnormal temperature differences.
