Corrugated Transformer Tank Guide

Role of a Corrugated Transformer Tank

A corrugated transformer tank is both a protective enclosure and a cooling surface for oil-immersed transformers. It holds transformer oil, protects the active part, and helps release heat generated during operation.

The corrugated panels expand and contract with oil volume changes caused by temperature variation. In many sealed distribution transformers, this design can reduce or eliminate the need for a separate conservator tank.

How Corrugated Panels Support Cooling

The folded steel walls increase the surface area of the tank. As hot transformer oil circulates inside the tank, heat transfers through the corrugated wall to the surrounding air. The larger surface area improves natural cooling without adding moving parts.

Panel depth, pitch, steel thickness, weld quality, and tank size all influence cooling performance. A tank must be designed together with the transformer rating and expected ambient temperature.

Manufacturing and Welding Quality

Corrugated tanks are commonly made from steel sheets formed by specialized equipment, then welded into a complete tank body. Leak tightness is critical because the tank must safely contain oil throughout transportation, installation, and service.

Manufacturers should control panel forming, corner welding, flange flatness, surface preparation, pressure testing, and coating thickness. Defects in any of these areas can lead to oil leakage, corrosion, or assembly problems.

Advantages for Distribution Transformers

Corrugated tanks are widely used because they combine cooling, oil expansion compensation, and compact construction. They are especially practical for sealed distribution transformers installed in utilities, factories, commercial sites, and renewable energy projects.

  • Increased cooling area without external radiator banks
  • Flexible wall movement for oil expansion
  • Compact layout for many distribution transformer ratings
  • Reduced maintenance needs when properly sealed

Buyer Checklist

Before purchasing a corrugated transformer tank, review the drawing, oil volume, pressure test requirement, coating system, corrosion protection, gasket interface, and compatibility with bushings and accessories.

For international supply, packaging is also important. Corrugated panels can be damaged by rough handling, so exporters should use suitable bracing, moisture protection, and clear lifting instructions.
